I designed a portable urine dip strip analyser for Indian hospitals, labs and home care — turning a bench-bound, expensive test into a one-tray, one-button device. The design is protected by 1 design patent and 2 trademarks.

What did I find?

The rulebook keeps moving

Existing analysers are heavy, immobile, hard to operate, costly and rarely available — so most testing stays manual and inconsistent.

Urine tests are among the most common diagnostics in India, yet the tooling had never been designed for the people running them.

What did I build?

A single-hand, tray-loaded analyser with a five-step workflow and a registered brand identity — 1 design patent, 2 trademarks.

BEFORE URIDSA

Urine analysis in most Indian hospitals and labs still runs on bench-bound machines: heavy, fixed to one room, expensive to buy and awkward to operate. Where no machine exists, strips are read by eye against a printed chart — so results shift between technicians and between visits.

My focus:

I designed for the pathology lab technician first — the highest-volume user, and the one whose results everyone else depends on. Every decision, from the single-hand grip to the tray that loads the strip without touching the pads, came from watching that job done fifty times a day.

Who It Is For

I interviewed practitioners and compiled where tests are conducted, by whom, and for what purpose. Pathology labs run the largest share; half of all tests are performed by lab workers.

Test data by place, profession and purpose.

Personas built from the interviews and used throughout development.

AFTER URIDSA

The design brief came straight out of those five complaints. UriDSA is light enough to carry, loads a strip on a tray instead of by hand, reads the pads itself, and costs a fraction of a bench-top analyser so the same test runs the same way in a lab, at a bedside, or at home.

Five directions,

one survivor

The final form kept the soft over-moulded grip and the horizontal tray, and dropped the colour-blocked shells that read consumer rather than clinical.

THE OUTCOME
